Fibroids, cysts and endometriosis: when surgery may be needed
Fibroids, ovarian cysts and endometriosis are common. Many are managed without surgery. Surgery is considered only when it is truly likely to help.

Fibroids
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus. Small fibroids without symptoms are often just observed.
Surgery may be considered when fibroids cause heavy periods, ongoing pain, pressure symptoms or difficulty with pregnancy.
Ovarian cysts
Many ovarian cysts are functional and resolve on their own. Doctors usually follow them with a scan before deciding anything.
Surgery may be advised for cysts that are large, persistent, painful, or have features that need closer evaluation.
Endometriosis
Endometriosis can cause painful periods, pelvic pain and fertility concerns. Many patients are managed with medical care.
Surgery may be considered when pain is not controlled, when there are cysts, or when it is affecting fertility.
How the decision is made
Decisions are always based on your symptoms, your scans, your age and your future plans. It is a shared decision, not a rushed one.
