Trying for a baby: when should you consult a fertility specialist?
Many couples wonder how long they should try before seeking help. There is no single answer, but a few gentle guidelines can help you decide the right time to consult.

The general timing guide
For most couples under 35, a consultation is usually considered after about one year of trying without success.
If the woman is 35 or older, it is reasonable to consult after around six months of trying.
When to consult earlier
- Irregular or very infrequent periods.
- Known PCOS, endometriosis or fibroids.
- Previous pelvic surgery or infection.
- Previous pregnancy loss.
- Known fertility concerns in either partner.
What a first consultation usually looks like
A first visit is mostly a conversation. Your doctor will ask about your cycle, health history, lifestyle and any concerns.
Some basic tests may be suggested for both partners so you can understand your situation clearly before deciding on any next step.
You do not have to figure this out alone
Seeing a fertility specialist does not mean starting treatment. Often, it is just a step to understand where you are and what options exist.
